Pond cleaning: The full drain and clean
Every pond requires a different level of maintenance. This article will cover the basic steps undertaken when your wildlife, fish or ornamental pond needs a deep clean to reset the system.
Here we will break down what you can expect from a full pond maintenance visit by Wye Valley Ponds.
Pond maintenance breakdown: Header 2
– Arrival: We will have a discussion and walk through with the customer to make sure we can access the pond and services we need and we are clear on the process involved.
– Preparation: If the water is re-usable we will set up a temporary pool to store some or all of the existing pond water.
– Drainage: We then empty the pond using a variety of pumps. Fish, wildlife and plants will be carefully added to the temporary storage pool.
– Cleaning: The silt deposited at the bottom of the pond will be gently lifted and removed by hand. This is a great organic fertiliser and we recommend that this is added to your garden beds, vegetable plot or hedge base etc. where it can be utilised.
– Feature cleaning: If you have a waterfall, spitter fountain or other water feature we will clean and assess them at this stage.
– Equipment servicing: If you have a filter system or components we will strip and service them where possible and advise on spare parts or replacements if required. Pipework can be replaced or upgraded and this is when we change consumables such as a UV bulb, lighting bulbs or ion gen probes.
– Wash down: We will hose down and brush the lining of the pond and empty out the waste.
– Liner assessment/patching: Once the lining has dried we can give it a look over for any holes that may be effecting your water level. We include a small patch at no cost in all pond cleans and can advise on larger or multiple holes
– Plants: We will be able to assess the plants and remove, split or reduce plants as required. We can re-pot any plants that would benefit from this using aquatic media and a pebble dressing. Plants are now re-positioned in the pond. We offer a variety of aquatic plants in quality pots or loose and are happy to discuss a planting scheme with you.
– Fish: Now is a good time to take a look at the fish to check for any signs of illness or distress.
– Re-filling: Now we can return the water to the pond along with the fish and wildlife. If the water level needs topping up we use your supply and condition it to remove and bind any toxic chemicals and heavy metals.
– Pack up: We will drain clean and pack up our kit leaving your garden looking clean and clear again.
– Final discussion walk though: Here we can discuss any issues discovered or resolved and answer any questions you may have.
We provide maintenance contracts on a schedule to suit you from one off deep cleans to regular visits to keep your pond looking perfect.
